My journey with photography (so far)
I recently moved apartments and my partner (Megan) asked if I would like to print some of my photos to decorate our otherwise bare walls. This simple question got me thinking about my favourite shots and my journey into photography.
In late 2016 my girlfriend and I traveled to America and that trip spurred two things; Our desire to move to NYC (which is why I’m here now) and a love of photography. Before the trip I hadn’t picked up a camera in a number of years, the last time being my previous trip to America in late 2012. Previously based in Melbourne and being exposed to so many brilliant photographers and creatives, I decided I wanted to capture our holiday to preserve those all important memories. After speaking to a few friends I picked up an RX100 m3 the day before we left and from that point the powerful little point and shoot barely left my side.
After about 12 months of using my RX100 I decided that I wanted to get into more sports photography and decided to treat myself for my birthday to a new Nikon D610. I settled on the D610 and the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G (still my favourite lens today) with the body being a great combination of “pro” performance and affordability. It was around this time I also got a Lightroom/Photoshop subscription and have been learning something new every shoot since. After buying my D610 I have also bought the Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D (this lens has crazy cool colours) and won (lucky right!) a Nikkor 70-200 f/4G which I use when shooting sports.
The last 15 months have been a great learning experience and I can confirm that photography is much more involved than just pressing a button. Photography has also been an excellent creative outlet from my accounting day job (especially because I can’t draw or play music). I have shot everything from our trips away to Run Melbourne and NYC marathon for a running journal, numerous cyclocross races, the Australian Road Nationals, track cycling and product shoots. Being based in NYC, I now have many incredible backdrops to take photos plus being surrounded by a number of excellent photogs at TBD has got me very excited for 2019. Keep an eye out on the journal for my cycling and non-cycling photography throughout the year and here are a few of my favourite shots from my journey with photography so far:
